Top End could unearth our first Maradona

Next Australian great footballer could be an Aborigine, if this commentary is to be believed.

Countless hours playing with a ball of sorts in varying weather, on varying surfaces, usually against players of mixed abilities, helped the intuition of greats such as Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Pele, Roberto Rivelino, Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane.

And today, the streets of Buenos Aires and Rio, or Abidjan and Accra, are the breeding grounds for greatness, giving many an escape from poverty via football as they develop skills that one day will earn them millions from the world’s top clubs.

Nurturing this instinctive type of player will be Australian football’s approach over the next decade - letting the youngsters play and express themselves while encouraging and nurturing the brilliance when a diamond is uncovered. Yet while we develop this approach, I found a place during the week that will surely provide Australia with its first FIFA world player - Arnhem Land.

Millennium stars don’t fade away easily

Stars may shine down but they will not fade away so easily. Interesting mention of Zizou.

Well, Brian Lara has more or less withdrawn from One-day cricket; Tiger Woods has all but lost his aura of invincibility; Michael Schumacher is looking forlorn; and Zinedine Zidane seems slower than his own shadow too.

Yes, across continents and across sports, the slowing down phenomenon seems to be gathering momentum. But we are talking about the champions of the new millennium: they don’t fade away easily.

Free cell phones

I have been using that old Nokia 1110 for some time, it feels like a dinosaur compared to the various new and advanced cell phones that are available these days. I was thinking of probably getting a Nokia as well, since it is a well-known brand here and I’ve always been familiar with a Nokia handphone anyway. So I was searching the web for what Nokia model I should probably get, when I came across this featured Verizon cell phone deals. A lot of handphones there, but no Nokia? Oh well, I guess its better to have a handphone rather than none at all, right? There is also a deal for a free cell phone with any new subscription to Cingular network. Very interesting deal, I wonder why the local telecommunications companies here do not do the same?

Totti’s red card retaliation

This is better than Zidane’s head-butt  Football fans saw the best and worst of Francesco Totti at the weekend. The Italian star expertly touched home Roma’s equalizer — Totti’s Serie A-leading 13th goal — in the 1-1 draw with Roma but then over-retaliated to a Fabio Galante elbow at the end of the match. Enjoy the show!

Audio books

I like to read books but as a sports fan, I find myself more often outside rather than indoors picking up a good book from Sidney Sheldon, Edgar Allan Poe or even Stephen King. I love these authors but when you are on the move, where can you find the time to read books? Well fortunately in this day and age we have Audio books to turn to, all I have to do is listen. And listen, that I can do indeed. Why, if they have vending machines for audio books, I would certainly be a frequent buyer. Reading (or rather, listening to) books will no longer be an issue for sportsmen who likes books. Right?
