Defending Zizou from Chicago Sun-Times editorial

Here are two letters of Zizou’s fans expressing their displeasure at a recent Chicago Sun-Times editorial which commented recently on the purported Zidane move to Chicago Fire.

Characterizing Zinedine Zidane as a butthead is like saying Dennis Rodman was nothing but a brute because of his famous head-butt (”France’s butt-head could be Fire’s Beckham,” Feb. 18). It’s unfortunate that Zidane’s incident occurred on the biggest stage at the most important time, because it’s somewhat out of character for him. Would Fire fans welcome him to Chicago? You betcha. We’d welcome Zidane just like Bulls fans welcomed the Worm.

Why bother writing a story about the great Zidane when you clearly know nothing about him? Many consider him the greatest player ever. Yet you somehow reduce one action into his career being a circus sideshow. The shock of that action wasn’t that it happened — it was who committed the action. Though you are, apparently, incapable of grasping the vastness of the move, the Fire getting Zidane would allow Chicago to claim another one of the sporting world’s all-time greats as one of its own. Believe me when I say Chicago soccer fans will be positively giddy to see Zidane. If you gave him a shot, his magic might even capture your eye, as well.
