Zidane big fan of Celtic star Nakamura

Zidane admits to being a big fan of Japanese player Shunsuke Nakamura. Interesting that Zizou has an interest in Asian players.

Legend Zinedine Zidane admits he’s a big fan of Celtic’s Japanese playmaker Shunsuke Nakamura and predicts more Asian players to be soon playing with Europe’s biggest clubs.

On Saturday, Zidane dazzled more than 10,000 fans at a charity match in northern Thailand and later remarked: “Asian football is in the process of making a big step forward.

“When you see players like Nakamura who are playing in Europe … they are bringing something positive to Asian football.

Defending Zizou from Chicago Sun-Times editorial

Here are two letters of Zizou’s fans expressing their displeasure at a recent Chicago Sun-Times editorial which commented recently on the purported Zidane move to Chicago Fire.

Characterizing Zinedine Zidane as a butthead is like saying Dennis Rodman was nothing but a brute because of his famous head-butt (”France’s butt-head could be Fire’s Beckham,” Feb. 18). It’s unfortunate that Zidane’s incident occurred on the biggest stage at the most important time, because it’s somewhat out of character for him. Would Fire fans welcome him to Chicago? You betcha. We’d welcome Zidane just like Bulls fans welcomed the Worm.

Why bother writing a story about the great Zidane when you clearly know nothing about him? Many consider him the greatest player ever. Yet you somehow reduce one action into his career being a circus sideshow. The shock of that action wasn’t that it happened — it was who committed the action. Though you are, apparently, incapable of grasping the vastness of the move, the Fire getting Zidane would allow Chicago to claim another one of the sporting world’s all-time greats as one of its own. Believe me when I say Chicago soccer fans will be positively giddy to see Zidane. If you gave him a shot, his magic might even capture your eye, as well.

Could Zidane follow Becks to the States?

We wish that he would, but Zizou has reportedly brushed off questions about whether he will come out of retirement and move to the States to resurrect his career again. Personally, we think that he really should, the world still needs the French Magician.

French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane brushed off questions yesterday about whether he would come out of retirement to play in the United States and follow in the footsteps of former Real Madrid teammate David Beckham.

Zidane was in Thailand for a charity match billed as his first match since the 2006 World Cup, where he headbutted Italian opponent Marco Materazzi during the final and ended his career with a red card. France lost to Italy on penalty kicks.

There has been speculation the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year might follow Beckham’s lucrative switch to play club soccer in the U.S.

Zidane repeatedly refused to take questions about his future plans, and a member of his entourage told reporters Zidane would not talk to them at all if such queries continued.

Beckham to get $28 million base salary

Becks is due to get $28 million as his basic salary when he moves to LA Galaxy. And guess what, that is only a fraction of the actual salary.

David Beckham’s playing contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy is worth about $27.5 million in base salary over five seasons, according to a person familiar with Major League Soccer agreements.

It’s a fraction of the $250 million income figure floated for the English star when he agreed to the deal last month.

Beckham’s average base salary of about $5.5 million was disclosed Friday by a person who had been briefed on the deal and who spoke on condition of anonymity because those details had not been announced.

Simon Oliveira, Beckham’s spokesman, would not confirm the figure but didn’t dispute it.

“That is only one element to his salary and package, which had to be disclosed in accordance with MLS guidelines,” Oliveira said.

AEG, the company that runs the Galaxy, trumpeted a far higher figure when Beckham’s agreement was announced last month.

So why Zidane is still hesitating to join his English counterpart and move to the States to resurrect his career?

Shooting against poverty

Interesting writeup on the charity match that Zizou and Ronaldo are expected to play in Thailand. More football stars are certainly needed to make a stand against poverty, instead of lining their pockets with money like what the EPL has denigrated into these days.

Football legends Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane are inviting some of the world’s top players to join them in an all-star line-up for a match against poverty next month as part of a push to raise awareness of and funds for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The fourth “Match Against Poverty: Ronaldo and friends vs. Zidane and friends” will be played on 19 March at the Stade du Vélodrome in Marseille, France, with the two stars, both Goodwill Ambassadors for the UN Development Programme (UNDP), each captaining an international team in a friendly aimed at mobilizing the public in the fight against poverty.

“It has been really encouraging to see the response from the public and the media to the previous games,” said AC Milan striker Ronaldo, who with former French captain Zidane has been the driving force behind the Match Against Poverty since 2003. “We really want to continue mobilizing the world of football in helping to raise awareness and overcome poverty.”
