A winning French symbol who’s not as popular as Zidane

Tony Parker may have won the NBA championship but he is nowhere near the stature of Zidane. Too bad.

FRENCH president Nicolas Sarkozy praised Tony Parker for his ‘magnificent performance’ in the San Antonio Spurs’ latest NBA championship.

Sarkozy said in a letter to Parker that he has been following the basketball player’s progress ‘with passion and admiration’ and saw a message for the nation in Parker’s historic MVP award.

‘You are the symbol of the France that wins,’ he wrote, using the expression the newly elected Sarkozy used in his successful presidential campaign.

Parker became the first European-born player to receive the NBA Finals MVP honour after the Spurs swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games.

It was the Spurs’ fourth championship and Parker’s third.

Silent assassin who shot down Zidane

How did Zizou won over his Valencia doubters? Nick Smith has the story:

Whether he’s spending World Cup finals ploughing his head into corner-kicks or an Italian’s chest, upstaging Zinedine Zidane is beyond most ordinary human beings.

Which is why Rafael Benitez is no ordinary human being.

Zidane arrived at Real Madrid in the summer of 2001 – the reigning World and European Championship winning captain becoming the most expensive player in history in the process of completing his £45million move from Juventus.

The facts were terrifyingly simple for all in Europe, let alone Spain. The official FIFA Club of the Millennium were beginning the new one by securing the best player on the planet. Nothing could stop them now.

Transfer speculation: Marco Materazzi to Tottenham Hotspur (£3 million)

Yuck, what a poor choice of a player that Tottenham has.

Spurs are one of those teams who attract some flak for being bit too ‘nice’ to win the big prizes. According to the People, Martin Jol might be about to take steps to change that image.

The paper says that Jol is lining up a bid for Italian hardman Marco Materazzi- the man famously headbutted by Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup Final.

Anyone who saw the Spurs boss play as a midfielder with West Brom and Coventry will know that though he had skill he was also one of those Dutchmen well acquainted with the ‘clog’- so a move for a tough defender like the ex-Everton man wouldn’t be a shock.

Zidane hails “immortal” Beckham

Zidane hails his former team-mate at Real Madrid, calling him the “immortal” of world football.

Zinedine Zidane has said David Beckham will be revered as one of the world’s greatest footballers in years to come and that Real Madrid should have done more to keep him.

Beckham will play his final match for Madrid today as they look to seal the Spanish league title on the last day of the season.

Martial arts equipment

I love watching movies involving some form of martial arts. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Naruto, The Karate Kid and various Chinese kung-fu movies are just some examples of entertainment involving martial arts. Man has always been interested in ways to defend themselves in unarmed combat and martial arts was born out of that desire. Martial arts, is not as easy as it looks, however. Just like football, martial arts is an art in itself and one would need to be seriously disciplined in order to take up this sport. Of course, just like any sport, it requires the equipment and tools for one to participate and train in order to hone their skills to perfection.

Zidane parodies

Some interesting parodies of the Zidane head-butt. I must admit that they are really funny.
